Cleveland
Ursuline)

It

taken
at the
site
of the
first
Ursuline
School
on
Euclid
Avenue
and
Bond
(now
E
.
6th)
Street
. The
Ursulines
opened
their
school
on
September
9
,
1850
and
established
three
divisions
for
boarding
,
day
, and
parochial
students
.
Classes
were
conducted
in the
main
house
and in
renovated
outbuildings
.
Incorporated
as the
Ursuline
Academy
of
Cleveland
in
1854
, the
school
soon
enrolled
more
than
300
young
girls
and
women
. The
need
for
Catholic
educators
grew
along
with
Cleveland's
Catholic
population
.
Ursuline
sisters
,
who
had
traditionally
been
cloistered
,
became
more
visible
as they
began
to
reach
in
parish
schools
located
throughout
the
city
. In an
effort
to
make
higher
education
available
to
young
women
, the
Ursulines
expanded
the
curriculum
and
introduced
college-level
courses
to their
academic
program
. The
college
courses
,
taught
concurrently
with those
offered
in the
junior
and
senior
levels
of the
Ursuline
Academy
,
allowed
students
to
pursue
an
academic
degree
. In
1871
, the
school
became
the
first
chartered
women's
college
in
Ohio
.
