Ohio
and was the
county
prosecutor
for
Putnam
County
before
the
Civil
War
. He
resigned
his
office
and
enlisted
with the
Union
Army
as a
Private
for
90
days
in the
21st
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
,
Company
E
on
April
20
,
1861
.
Company
E
mustered
in
April
27
,
1861
at
Camp
Taylor
in
Cleveland
,
Ohio
and was then
sent
to the
Kanawha
River
area
of
West
Virginia
and
fought
against
the
rebel
army
at
Scarey
Creek
,
July
1861
. the
Company
mustered
out
August
12
,
1861
at
Columbus
,
Ohio
.
Gribben
then
re-enrolled
for a
term
of
3
years
, on
September
2
,
1861
at
Camp
Vance
,
Findley
,
Ohio
. He was
appointed
1st
Lieutenant
for the
57th
OVI
,
Company
A on
September
21
,
1861
. The
57th
OVI
was
raised
in
Northwest
Ohio
and
trained
at
Camp
Vance
in
Findlay
,
Ohio
. He was
promoted
to
Captain
of the
same
company
on
February
8
,
1862
and was
sent
to
Camp
Chase
. The
57th
deployed
to
western
Kentucky
and was
among
the
first
units
to be
engaged
with the
Confederate
Army
at
Shiloh
. The
Captain
suffered
two
minie
ball
wounds
to the
chest
during
the
battle
; the
second
proving
fatal
.
Gribben
was
killed
during
the
first
hours
of the
Battle
of
Shiloh
,
April
6
,
1862
and was
buried
in
Pittsburg
Landing
,
Tennessee
. The
family
had the
Captain’s
remains
returned
to
Ohio
,
where
he
is
buried
beside
his
parents
, his
sister
Margaret
, and
two
infant
siblings
in the
cemetery
in
Savannah
,
Ohio
,
near
where
he
grew
up
.
