HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
After breaking with the established Lutheran church, a group of Separatists fled their
homeland of Württemberg, Germany in search of religious freedom. The group arrived
in Philadelphia on August 14, 1817, where the Quakers befriended them. Soon after,
they contracted to buy a 5,500- acre tract of land on the east bank of the Tuscarawas
River, agreeing to pay the purchase price over a 15- year period. The new community
was named Zoar, meaning “ a sanctuary from evil.” In the fall of 1817, the Separatist
leader, Joseph Bimeler, and other members left to prepare their new home. On
December 1, 1817, the first home in the new village was completed.
The Separatists wanted to create a self- sufficient community where they would be able
to worship freely, but an economic system had to be established first. Since the first
year of farming produced insufficient yields to pay their land debt, private land ownership
was rejected in favor of a form of communism advocated by Johannes Breymaier that
was accepted by most of the members. Under the new system, Bimeler remained the
community’s leader. Both male and female members of the community signed the
Articles of Association, which created the Society of Separatists of Zoar, on April 15,
1819. The Articles were revised in 1824 and in 1833 the Society was incorporated. All
stated the government of the society would be a board of three trustees, a standing
committee of five, an agent general, and a cashier. The Society held all members’
property and wealth. In return for following the decisions of the Society’s trustees,
members received food, clothing and shelter.

As Zoar grew, local industries like brick and rope- making developed, and a sawmill, flour
mill, and woolen mill were established. The tinshop and foundry manufactured a variety
of goods for sale, while farms produced so much food that many products were sold in
other towns.
Thanks to the communal economy, thrift, and Bimeler’s leadership, Zoar was almost
totally self- sufficient by 1834. However, when Bimeler died in 1853, the Society started
to wane in productivity. Despite their commitment to communism, the Zoarites
floundered without Bimeler’s spiritual and business leadership, and their initiative
declined.
Changing social and economic times also impacted the community. The advent of the
railroad and the rise of mass- production industries threatened Zoar’s small businesses.
Younger members left the community to make their fortunes. Nonmembers were being
hired to work in the fields and in various industries, and older members felt their
presence had an adverse affect on the young Separatists.
On March 10, 1898, members decided to dissolve the Society. According to the final
settlement, they were able to keep their clothing, personal items and their home in the
village. They also received about fifty acres of land and a $ 200 cash dividend. The
collapse of the Society also meant the end of the Separatist religion.
In 1930, the Zoar Historical Society was formed to collect records and artifacts pertaining
to the community’s past. In 1936, Zoar and Tuscarawas County leaders joined with
officials of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society ( OSAHS) to form the
Zoar Foundation. In addition to collecting and preserving books and manuscripts
pertaining to Zoar, the Foundation acquired properties in Zoar Village. In 1941, the Zoar
Foundation transferred its possessions and care of Zoar Village to OSAHS.
During the 1940s, many of the Zoar Museum’s manuscripts were brought to the OSAHS
library in Columbus. After 1954, additional items, including account books, were
received. E. B. Nixon of Rhinebeck, New York provided approximately 75 Zoar business
letters and receipts from 1884 to 1897. In 1958, Laura E. Hostetler sold OSAHS 13
items relating to a lawsuit involving Bimeler. Typescript copies of several letters
pertaining to Zoar immigrants, written by Quakers, were received from Mrs. Horatio
Wales of Spring Hill Farm in Massillon, Ohio ( these are now in the Massillon ( Ohio)
Museum Collection. Other papers acquired included those of Lillian Ruof Bimeler Sturm
( 1877- 1942), whose family ran the Zoar Hotel; the partnership of Zimmerman and
Kuecherer, who operated the Zoar store after the dissolution of the Zoar Society; and the
Zoar Post Office, the Zoar Municipality, and the Zoar Foundation. Facsimiles of some of
these letters can be seen on the Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook, accessible through a
search at http:// www. ohiomemory. org.
According to the 2000 census, Zoar today is a community of approximately 200 families
living in houses built from 1817 to the present. The 12- block historic district is unique in
that it remains a living part of the community. The Ohio Historical Society maintains ten
buildings as museums, but the remainder is primarily comprised of restored residences.
Many of these residences contain home occupations, including Bed and Breakfast
establishments, shops and restaurants, much like in the Zoarites' era.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection begins with Society administrative records, documenting the community’s
establishment, its constitution and articles of incorporation, and results of its annual
election of officers. Legal records include those documenting various lawsuits in which
the Society was involved.
Family histories and eulogies yield descriptive facts about some Society members, while
membership applications, contracts, and dissolutions of those contracts provide general
information. Considered applications for “ probationary membership,” if contracts were
not broken or officially renounced, they enabled applicants to be admitted to full
membership in the Society.
The majority of the collection focuses on the Society’s business ledgers, daybooks, and
other records. Account books provide insight into the operations of specific Society
businesses, including the Zoar Furnace Store, the Zoar Society Brewery, Zoar’s tannery,
and its canal mill. An especially complete collection of correspondence, lodging and
board records describe business at the Zoar Hotel from 1842 to 1930. The collection
also provides information about the Zoar Store, which was operated as a partnership by
Zimmerman and Kuecherer after the dissolution of the Zoar Society in 1898 until 1903.
Kuecherer assumed the business until 1925, when F. W. Rowe followed as its operator.
Some ledgers in the collection contain accounting records for a number of Society
businesses. These ledgers have been grouped together and identified as “ General
Records of Society Businesses.”
Society invoices, receipts, and other loose financial records complement the bound
volumes of financial information pertaining not only to the Society’s general business
operations, but also to food, clothing, and other goods and property allocated to
members. Spanning the lifetime of the Society and beyond, these records comprise the
majority of the collection. Business correspondence from 1856 through 1900
complement the information contained in these documents.
Records pertaining to Zoar agencies, including the Zoar Post Office and the Office of the
Union Express, provide detailed information about the Society’s communication with
other communities. Minutes, financial records, and other official documents describe
activities of the Zoar, Ohio Municipal Corporation and the Zoar Foundation. Lillian Ruof
Bimeler Sturm’s newspaper clippings not only describe Zoar in the early years of the 20th
century, but also provide accounts of the Harmony Society and the death of Father
Jacob Henrici, its leader, in 1892.
The collection is not limited to Society business dealings. Music compositions and books
and correspondence of Society members, including those written by those serving in the
Civil War, provide insight into the lives of these individuals. Mrs. Sturm’s extensive
collection of letters, postcards, product advertisements, rewards of merit, and craft
instruction books, and school writings are particularly descriptive of a female’s life during
the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The collection concludes with Mrs. Sturm’s photograph albums. These pristine items of
the collection provide visual records of individuals named in other documents in the
collection, from her relatives to other Society members.
