Description	This limited edition volume of poems was published in 1907 by Dr. James Ball Naylor (1877-1945), a Morgan County, Ohio native. Songs From the Heart of Things covers a variety of subjects and emotions, but all are loosely linked through their concern with family and the home. The poems are generally romanticized remembrances of simpler times; many use vernacular Appalachian speech patterns and idioms. Ideals of patriotism, spirituality, and evocation of nature are major themes. Many of the poems are accompanied by photographs. The book is 202 pages in length and measures 7" x 10" (17.78 x 25.4 cm). The beginning through page 58 and pages 181-183 are shown here. Naylor was a graduate of Starling Medical College who wrote his first book Current Coins, when 16 years old. He later was an editorial writer for newspapers in Marion, Ohio, and Chicago. Naylor wrote numerous volumes of historical fiction about the Muskingum Valley and the Northwest Territory, including Goldenrod and Thistledown (1896), In the Days of St. Clair (1902), Mad Anthony's Banner(1903), and The Kentuckian (1905). The author received an honorary doctorate in literature from Marietta College in 1937.
