Description	These 3.5" x 3.5" (8.89 x 8.89 cm) photographs, taken between 1963 and 1979, document excavations of the Mound City Group, a significant Hopewell earthwork center in Ross County, Ohio. This excavation was the first at the site using modern archaeological methods. It was also the beginning of a two-decade-long effort to relocate Mound City's 23 mounds to their original locations. This work established that every mound at Mound City covered the remains of a building, and that these buildings were more regular in form than previous archaeological work reported. The first photograph shows the excavation of Mound 13 in 1969. The small, dark ovals are the remains of wall posts from the building that was used by the Hopewell nearly 2000 years ago. A portion of the Mound 13 reconstruction is present just behind the excavators. A second image shows the excavation of a borrow pit (an area used to take fill or other raw materials for distribution or use elsewhere) outside the southeastern corner of the embankment at Mound City. This borrow pit did not appear on the original map of the earthworks made in the 1840s. It was unknown until 1963, when the excavations accidentally uncovered it. In the third photograph, archeologists are uncovering the remains of the Hopewell building beneath Mound 10. The small, dark ovals in the lower right of this photograph represent the remains of the wall posts from this ancient building. The final photograph shows the remains of the Hopewell building beneath Mound 17. The small white ovals mark the location of wall post remains. Unlike many of the buildings at Mound City, the Mound 17 building is oval and lacks the classic double wall construction technique. The Mound City site was first extensively mapped and excavated in the 1840s. The results of that work were important for supporting arguments that the ancestors of existing American Indian groups were responsible for building the thousands of mounds and earthworks across the Eastern United States. Mound City Group was again excavated in 1920-1921 by Ohio Historical Society archaeologists. After this work, the site was reconstructed, somewhat inaccurately, for interpretation purposes.
