Description
"A
Historical
Report
of the
Sixteen
Years
Work
at
Hiram
House
"
is
a
113-page
report
by
George
Bellamy
and
others
at
Ohio's
first
settlement
house
.
It
documents
the
organization's
social
programs
,
among
which
were a
trade
school
, a
kindergarten
,
outings
to
parks
, and the
Social
Reform
Club
. The
book
measures
5.75
"
x
9.25
"
(14.61
x
23.5
cm)
.
George
A.
Bellamy
(1872-1960)
, a
member
of the
Hiram
College
class
of
1896
,
served
as
director
of
Hiram
House
for
fifty
years
.
Bellamy
and
seven
members
of his
YMCA
Bible
class
were
concerned
with
improving
the
living
conditions
of the
poor
in
Cleveland
. Their
discussions
on
Progressive
social
reforms
led
them to
consider
the
work
of
settlement
houses
around
the
country
,
such
as
Andover
House
(later
renamed
South
End
house)
,
so
called
because
students
from
Andover
College
founded
it
. The
class
decided
to
investigate
the
possibility
of
building
such
a
house
in
Cleveland
.
Visiting
the
Whiskey
Island
neighborhood
of
Cleveland
convinced
Bellamy
,
Guy
Strickland
, and
H.L
.
Atkinson
of the
great
need
for a
settlement
house
.
Bellamy
assumed
the
responsibility
for
raising
funds
for
salaries
,
rents
,
furniture
, and
equipment
, and
students
and
faculty
of
Hiram
College
pledged
$300
toward
the
project
for the
first
year
of
operation
.
Hiram
House
Settlement
expanded
in
1897
to
include
a
summer
camp
for
residents
of
Cleveland's
crowded
tenements
and by the
early
1900s
, had
established
a
permanent
site
for the
camp
in the
Chagrin
Valley
. This
site
became
the
organization's
home
.
Hiram
House
continued
to
follow
Bellamy's
vision
of
providing
educational
programs
in a
healthy
and
safe
environment
for
residents
of
Cleveland's
inner
city
through
the
twentieth
century
.
