Description	These two letters document the experiences of the Hastings family of Cambridge, Ohio during the Civil War. In a letter from Sarah Elizabeth Meeks to her cousin John Fletcher Hastings, a Union soldier, Meeks discusses family affairs in Guernsey County and complains about having to go to school. She asks her cousin if he has encountered any "rebels" and tells him to "kill them ammediately [sic]." The letter is two pages and measures 3.5" x 6" (8.89 x 15.24 cm). In a second letter dated December 18, 1863, William B. and Ann E. Hastings write to their cousin about daily life in the Cambridge area. They discuss going to school and butchering hogs on the farm. William lists the number of cattle and horses they have and expresses concern over how to keep them over the winter. He also writes about another family member who was involved in the Battle of Chickamauga. In her portion of the letter, Ann writes about the subjects she is studying in school. The letter is four pages and measures 5" x 7.75" (12.7 x 19.69 cm). This collection includes a third letter from a relative in Iowa that is not included here.

[illegible] got her foot burnt she has been very bad with it but is some better. I am agoing to school this summer I study arithmetic grammer & c I do not like to go to school no time there is a average of 25 schollars
