Singer's Sewing Machines, "VT7TTICli ARE THE ONLY SEWING- MA V V chines of any utility which can be used without making (m owner iiailetoa suit for infringement, of patented privileges, are still sold at REASONABLE PKICES, and with utufuestittned riiht. Haviug terminated our legal controversy with Elias Howe, Jr., aud procured his full license to use his invention, there is not the slightest claim that our machines infringe any oilier patent. The right to use the machines which we have sold, and snail iiereauer sen, is unquestionable. We own ten distinct patents on Sewing Machines, cov ering all the nice points of the invention, and all tho ma- iihines of other manufacturers infringo one or more of tlioin. Our patent securing tlie spring whereby the cloth, &c, is held to the feeding apparatus by a yielding pros- are, is infringed by all the machines now ottered in the market. Those who buy the interior and piratical ma chines, are hereby distinctly apprised that wo ahull compel them to pay us for the privih-ge of using them. Our legal rights will henceforth Ite rigidly enforced. THE IMMENSE SUPkillOHITY of Singer's Sewing Ma chined has boin completely established. They are of uni versal application tho same maciiiun doing nil kinus of work, anil uomtr it nerlectly. iney are not only superior in contrivance, but unequated in mechanical finish. They perform nil work required, anil continue to do it without getling out of order. TUESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 31. The Worsted Stocking. A TltUK UTOItY. " Father will have dune the great chimney to-nijjht, won't he mother t" said little Tom IIow-arU, as ho stood waiting for his father's breakfast, which hu carried to him at his work every, morning. " He said ho hoped all the prntfolding would lie down to-night," answered his mother, " and that'll he a tine sight ; for I never like the ending of (how great chimneys it's co risky thy father's to he the laH up." " Eh, then, but I'll go and see him, and help 'urn in rrivn a clirint nfiti'O In. enmita ilmtm 'I ROwl lToni I . . .. . ,, " And I urn, continued niRDiouier, n an goes right, we are to havo a lrolic to-morrow, and go into the country, and lake our dinners, and spend all the day amongst the woods." " Hurrah !" cried Tom, as he ran off to his (athrr's place of work, with a can of milk iu one '"""I "J w'o iTead in the other. His mother , , . , . . , , . . . Ktooil nt tho door watcbing lnm as be went uior- rily whistling down tho street, and then she thought of tho dear father ho was going to, and the (Janjorouii work ho was engaged in, and then Iiit heart sought its suro refuge, and she prayed to God to protect and bless her treasures. Tom, with a light heart, pursued his way to his lather, and, leaving him his breakfast, wcut to his own work, which was at some distance. In the evening, on his way home, he went round to sec how his father was getting on. James Howard, the father, and a number of other wort men had been building one of those lofty chiia neys, which, iu our great manufacturing towns, almost supply tho place ol other architectural beauty. This chimney was ono of tho highest and most tapering that lias ever been erected : and as Tom, shading his eyes from the slanting rays nl the setting sun, looked up to tho top in search of his father, his heart almost sank within him at tho appalling height. Tho scaffolding was almost all down ; the men at the bottom were removing tho last beams and poles. Tom's father stood alono on tho top. lie looked all round to see that everything was right, aud then waving his hat in the air, tho men below answered him with a long, loud cheer, little Tom shouting as heartily as any of them. As their voices died away, however, they heard a very different sound a cry of alarm and horror from above ! "The rope! The rope!" The men looked round, and, coiled upon tho ground lay the rope, which, before the scaffolding was removed, should have been fastened to the chimney, for Tom's father to come down by! The scaffolding had been taken down, without their remembering to take tho rope up. There was a dead silence. They all know it was impossible to throw tho rope up high enough to reach the top of the chimney ; or if he could, it would hardly have been sale. They stood in silonco and dig- may, unable to give any help or think of any means of safety. And Tom's father. He walked round and round the little circle, the dizzy height seeming every moment to grow more fearful, and the solid earth further and further from him. In the sudden paniu he lost his presence of mind, and his senses almost failed him. lie shut his eyes; he felt as if, the next moment, lie must be dashed to pieces on the ground below. Tho day had passdas industriously aud swiftly as usual, with Tom's mother at home. She was always busily employed for her husband and children, in some way or other; aud to-day she had bceu harder at work than usual, getting ready for this holiday to-morrow. She had just hnishcd all her preparations, and her thoughts were silently thanking God for her happy home, and for all the blessings of lilo, when Tom ran in; his face was as white ns ashes; and he could hardly get his words out. "Mother! Mother! lie canna get down." "Who, lad? Thy father?" asked his mother. "They've forgotten to leave him the rope," answered Tom, still scarcely able to speak. His mother started up, horror-struck, and stood for a moment as if paralyzed; then pressing her hands over her face, as if to shut out the terrible picture, and breathing a prayer to God for help, she rushed out of the house. When she reached the place where her husband was at work, a crowd had collected round tho foot of tho chimney, and stood there quite helpless, gazing up with faces full of sorrow. "He says he'll throw himself down," exclaimed they, as Mrs. Howard camo up. "Ho is going to throw liimselt down." "Tlico mnnna do that, lad!" cried the wife. with clear, hopeful voice; "thee mnnna do that. Wait a bit. Tak' olf thy Btocking, lad, and un ravel it, and let down the thread with a bit of mortar. Dost hear me, Jem?" The man made a sign of assent, for it seemed as if he could not speak ; and, taking olf his stocking, unravelled tho worsted thread, row after row. Tho peoplo stood round in breathless silence and suspense, wondering what Tom's mother could be thinking of, and why she sent him in such haste for the carpenter's ball of twine. "Let down ono end of the thread with a bit of stone, and keep fast hold of the other." cried she to her husband. Tho little thread came waving down tho tall chimney, blown hither and thither by the wind, but at last it reached the outstretched hands that wore waiting for it. Tom held the ball of string, while his mother tied one end of it to tlie worsted thread. "Now pull it up slowly," cried she to her husband, and she gradually unwound tho string as the worsted drew it gently up. It stopped the string lind reached her husband. "Now hold the string fast, and pull it up," cried she, and the string grow heavy, and hard to pull, for Tom and his mother had fastened the thick rope to it. They watched it gradually and slowly uncoiling from the ground, as the string was drawn higher. There was but ono coil left. It had renched tho top. " Thank Ood! thank God!" exclaimed the wife. She hid her face in her hands in silent prayer, and tremblingly rejoiced. The rope was up. The iron to which it should bo fastened was there all right; but would her husband be ablo to mako use of them t would not the ter ror of the past hour have so unnerved him, as to prevent him from taking tho necessary meas ures lor his saletyl fcho oiu not know me ma-gio influence which her few words had exercised over him. She did not know the strength that tho sound of her voice, so calm and steadlast, had filled him with as if tho little thread that carried him tho hope of life onco more, had convoyed to him some portion of that faith in God, which nothing ever destroyed or ehook in her truo heart. She did not know that, as he waited there, tho words came over liim, " Why art thou cast down, my soul ? and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God." She lifted up her heart to God for hope and strength. She could do nothing more for her husband, and her heart turned to God, and rested on him as on a rock. There was a great shout. " He's safe, mother, he's safe," cried little Tom. " Tliou'st saved me, Mary," said her husband, folding her in his arms. " JJut what ails thee? Thou seem'st more sorry than glad about it." Tom," said his father, " let thy mother lean on thy shoulder, and wo will take her home." And iu their happy home they poured forth their thanks to God for His great goodness: and their happy life together felt dearer and holier for the peril it had been iu, and for Ihe nearness that the danger had brought them unto God. The mind of man is sub ject to epidemics as well as his body, but of anotner order. 1'iague, me Black death, and cholera, have played their parts to some purpose in the world's history, and so have ghosts and goblins, witches and warlocks, imps and demons. As people are sometimes seized with influenza, scarlatina and other catching complaints, so are they with spirit-rapping, table-turning, mesmer ism, clairvoyance and subjects allied. Of late years the devil, who was wont in former times to .smear the brain with brimstone, baa been rather at a discount, and ghosts, or at all events spirits, iu tidier raiment than winding-sheets, have been rising in tho market. It is possible now for a man of strong faith, like Robert Owen, to see the ghost of Hamlet's father, and for a piece ot gold ono may chat with Homer and chop logic with Aristotle. It is possible to write gravely and learnedly respecting such follies and delusions, and to entertain belief that the devil has still something to attract him from his brimstone bed. To visit hifl snug little farm of the enrth, And ace how his stock gots on or to make the dish run after the spoon, through the medium of young ladies' lingers. London Critic. Statistics op Muscular Tower. Man has the power of imitating every motion but that of llight. To effect this he Las, in maturity and health, GO bones in his head, CO in his tbigs and legs, 02 in his arms and bands, and (!7 in his trunk. Ho has also 431 muscles. His heart makes C4 pulsations in a minute; therefore 3,740 in an hour, and 92,160 in a day. There are also three complete circulations of his blood in the short space of an hour. In respect to the comparative speed of animated beings and of impelled bodies, it may bo remarked that size and construction seem to have little influence, nor has comparative strength, though one body giving any quantity of motion to another it is said to lose so much of its own. The sloth is by no means a small animal, and yet it can travel only fifty paces in a day; a worm crawls only five inches in fifty seconds; but a ladybird can fly twenty million times its own length in less than an hour. An elk can run a mile and a half in seven minutes; an antelope a mile in a minute ; thcwild mulo of Tartary has aspeed even greater than that ; an eagle can fly eighteen learucs an hour ; and a Canary falcon con even roach 2.10 leagues in tho short space of sixteen hours. A violent wind travels sixty miles in an hour : sound, 1,142 English feet in a second. Bucke. A cat belonging to a widow lady in Ohio. lately sat upon a half dozen of duck's eggs, and continued her attention until the eggs were hatched; and there is now a fine brood of six young ones, half duck and half cat, having duck heads and cat tails; but what is more wonderful, mew and quack alternately. ATTENTION OF PURCHAS-ers is respectfully called to a new and gigantic invention in Pianofortes now RfR! fullv perfected, anil hernm tliM mihlli. known as Hall's Chhtial Tbipu-stiuxkid 1'uko. The peculiarity of the Cklrtoal Piaxo consists in its capacity lor nlave plnyitu) with tho single linger, an attaiumeut hitherto unknown to the Pianoforte. The most ordinary performer is enabled by the aid of this Improvement to produce effects in octavo playing that would confound u Thnlberg or a Lists. One of its chief excellencies is its capacity to be used at will as an ordinary Piano of the sweetest quality of tone, and U instantly changed by the use of a common pedal to ft combination so thrilling nnd majestic, as to captivate and charm the heart. These instruments are superior in power to two ordinary 7 octave Pianos, while for sweetness, purity, breadth, and richness of tone, they challenge the competition of tho world. This is the united testimony of I'rofcssors and Amateurs who have tusted the Celestial Piano. Ordinary Pianos of all sizes, new anil second hand for sale at reduced prices. " He said ho hoped all the prntfolding would lie down to-night," answered his mother, " and that'll he a tine sight ; for I never like the ending of (how great chimneys it's co risky thy father's to he the laH up." " Hurrah !" cried Tom, as he ran off to his (athrr's place of work, with a can of milk iu one '"""I "J w'o iTead in the other. Thou seem'st more sorry than glad about it." Jlut Mary could not speak; nnd if the strong arm of her husband had not held her up, she would have fallen to the ground tho sudden joy, after such great fear, had overcome her. Tom," said his father, " let thy mother lean on thy shoulder, and wo will take her home." And iu their happy home they poured forth their thanks to God for His great goodness: and their happy life together felt dearer and holier for the peril it had been iu, and for Ihe nearness that the danger had brought them unto God. And the holiday next day, was it not indeed a thanksgiving aaytJ-JnglM IS. N. Magazine. A Paik oi' SxuiTEKS.
