Cadiz Oct 30th 1821
Dear sir,
Through the encouragement you
have gave me in your letter I calculate to
make every possible haste I can to
become one of your workmen. I can't say
that I'll leave this sooner than six or eight
days as I have at present a piece in the
Loom. My wife and I have concluded that
I had better go on alone and leave her
behind a few weeks so that she might
get better prepared for the journey and
also that she will then be better satisfied
respecting the place she will be going to. I
suppose I'll have as
good a chance when I am two or
three weeks at Kendall to engage a
team there as I would here I have got but
little to take along a Loom a few triffling
little articles an affectionate wife
and three smiling little children constitute
the whole of my property. It will soon be
thirteen months since I left N.England I
there might have lived encircled by the
kindst people in the world had it not been
for the many
encouraging letters I received from my
relations in this neighbour-
hood who when they got among used every
stratigame in their power to strip me of all
I had in the world. Hope has been
flattering me all this summer that I would
again get back to Massachusetts
this fall but now I perceive (by the contents
of my pocket) I have been flattered in vain
working to every body as I have been for
some time back but an unhappy way of
making a living I am now rejoiced to think
I'll have but one employer and I have
every reason to believe that I'll do better
for the future. I trust you will never have
cause to repent of taking me into your
work altho, I am confident you will see
many faults in me for I must own.
I have many yet there is one I can safely
say I am free of that is drunkenness or
even the smallest love or inclination to
liquor. I am
dearest sir with respect
your obliged and ever
grateful friend
Moses McCommon
