Revisiting the Bravermans — One year later
By Ida Horwitz-Wbltmore
Writing about the Bravermans the second time around
is special for me. In the past
year, they have become dear
friends, and it has been quite
an experience to watch them
strive to attain particular goals
that most of us just take for
granted.
When I chronicled the family's first three months in Columbus in the late summer
and fall of 1993, they were
struggling to adjust to life as
New Americans. They had
much to learn not only about
our culture, but also about
Jewish heritage and traditions
that were denied to them in
Russia.
Coming from the Ukraine,
the Bravermans had joined
their anchor family, Alex
Schwartzman, his wife Svetlana Chernyakhovskaya, and
two daughters, Ellen, 18, and
Olga, 8, who had been living
here a few years.
The Bravermans are a multi-
generational family: Yakov
and Ester, their daughter,
Anna (Alex Schwartzman's
sister), and her husband, Alex,
and their two daughters, Tanya, 16, andSvetta, 13.
When we talked during that
first three-month period, Svetlana had to do a lot of interpreting. Now she only has to
translate some of what is said
in Russian to the grandparents:
"It is so much harder for the
older people to learn a new
language," she noted. "But
hard as it may be, they feel
they have a better life here."
Living in Bexley Plaza where
there are other New American
families, Yakov and Ester
haye a lot of friends to whom
they can speak in Russian. So
while communication in English is still difficult for them,
they are not lonely. And they
are close to their children and
grandchildren who reside in
the Barclay Square Apartments, less than a half mile
away.
Reflecting on their life, Ya
kov said philosophically, "In
Russia, we had a saying, 'If
you have good health, the rest
you can buy.'"
The family has greatly expanded its activities, which in
the beginning, consisted of
prirnarily a four-month ESL
(English as a Second Language) Program that they attended at the Leo Yassenoff
Jewish Community Center.
Now Anna is enrolled in an
ESL program at Columbus
State Community College
where she is already studying
at a high level.

of quality control in a large
electronics plant in Russia,
