Minn, Prtsident of Pathc Exchange, owners of tlit film, in which this assur¬ ance was gixcn. Tlie revision, whicll is a historic achii;vemfnt for the I. O. B. E., is the outennie of ncBOtialioiis between Mr. Cohen nn behalf of his organixation imd it.s Anti-DcfauiatioM League, wilh Will 11. Hays, reprcsenling the Motion Pic¬ ture Producers and Distributors of Amer¬ ica, Inc., and will he made in accordance with detailed snggehtions by Mr. Cohen and Dr, I.);ivid Philipson, dean of Amer¬ ican Reform Kabbi.s. Flinn's Telegram Mr. Flinn's telegram is as follows: "New York City, Jam 4, 1!»28. Alfred M. Cohen, President il'nai B'rith, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. DoMillc has agreed to thc changes of tilles and modifications of scenes out¬ lined in letter written by yourself and Dr. David Philipson of December 21st to Governor Millilceti of Hays organization. Am leaving;, for California tomorrow ' (Thursday) to as.sist on these cltanges to thc end that both the .spirit and the letter of what yon wanted will be accomplished and the corrections made in the picture now on exhibition before thc public in all rities may be made by January 18th. Re¬ gards. John C. Flinn, Vice Pre.sident Pathe iLxchange, Inc." Mr. Cohen, declining; to make public the letter detailing the modifications out¬ lined by him and Dr. Philipson and ac¬ cepted I)y Mr. DeMille and the Putlic Jixch:inge, nevertheless stated that the picture as revised will be preceded by a special prologue or preface written and signed by thc prjaducer. In this preface Mr. DcMilte .seeks completely to excul¬ pate the Jews of guilt for thc death of Jesus. The responsibility for the cruci¬ fixion, Mr. DeMillc's preface will say, was entirely that of Caiphas, thc cor¬ rupt High Priest, <m npjiointec of the Roman Empire, and other hirelings of that despotism which at thc time held Judea in thrall. The revision of the "King of Kings" as it is to, he shown after January IRth in this country, brings to an end a con¬ troversy which has been waged against it on the grounds that it libeled the Jew¬ ish race against whom it tended tn arouse prejudice and also that from the histor¬ ical aspect it was grossly inaccurate. Protests against thc picture were not limited to Jews, many leading Catholics and prominent leaders of other Christian denominations inveighing af^aiiist it also. When, before it was licensed for produc¬ tion in London, it was privately displayed to an invited gathering of British clergy¬ men, thc same controversy broke. out theie. Dr. W. 0. Thompson, Preisiident Emeritus of Ohio State University, Will Address Bryden Road Temple Brotherhood, Thursday Evening, January 26th, at the EUcs' Home A. Z. A. INSTALLATION OF! Students'Mass Meeting The proleslri of the liideijentkiil Order (if B'nai B'rith stressed a fear that thc film, if di.splayed in iis original version in certain countries in luirope, would fan the fires of unti-Scmiti.sm lo such an cx- teiil that bloody pogroms might ensue. Assurance By Will Hays Definite assuranre hy Will Hays that the iiicture would not be shown in coun¬ tries where it might lead to pogroms, was triven last month as the outcfimc of a con ference between him and Kx-Governor Millikcn, rcprescnling the Motion Pic' ture Producers and Distributors of Anier^ ica, Inc., and Mr. Cohen and Dr. Philip¬ son. representing the B'nai IJ-'rith and other Jewish interests. 'J'he negotiations which have resulted in the complete 'acceptance of the Jewish point of view regarding "King of Kings" were begun last November on the initi¬ ative of Mr. Hays, who, over the long distance telephone invitcil Mr. Cohen and Dr. Boris D. Bogen to New York for a conference, which was hekl at Mr. Hays' office at IWJ Fifth Avenue.. Ex-Govenior Millikcn and Mr. John Fh'nn were pres¬ ent at thc conference, which, according to Mr. Cohen's report to the Executive Com¬ mittee of thc Independent Order of B'nai B'rith began with a "revealing .speech" by Mr. Hays, in which he said th<it he desired above everything else that the motion picture be an agency for thc greatest good; that he realized its vast possibilities between racial and religious groups, and rejoiced that it had been given to him to aid in directing it to that end. According to Mr. Cohen, Mr. Hays went ou tr> say that he had called thc conference because he sought to find thc way of good will and to shun all thc paths that lend to prejudice. At another conference thc following day, Mr. Hays tuld Mr. Cohen that he souglil friendly and'reliable guidance so ihat when the industry produced a picture having to do with Jew.s it could be sure that the picture wouki give no offense or bi^, even intiuceiitty, an instigator of prej¬ udice. To thi.s end, he invited the friendly cooperation of the B'nai B'rith with whose activities he was familiar, due to the many occasions when its Anti- Defamation League had called thc at¬ tention of the motion picture utdustry to filnis containing matter ofleiisive to the Jewish people. Following the conference .Mr. Hays wrote the following letter to Mr. Cohen: "Again I want to assure you of my appreciation of your acceptance of the invitation to come here and confer with us for the development of a fuller co¬ operation. "It is*, as you know, our most earnest purpose to avoid in pictures anything that will cfTcnd any race or creed. To that end, its I liai'c tokl you, wc do earnestly desire the cooperation of your distin¬ guished Order, recognizing its splendid quality and how thoroughly representative it is of Jewish opinion. "Let me again assure you, too, of my hope that you will keep in close touch with us, as we will with you, and that you freely let us have your opinion, as wc will feel free to ask it, on all niancrs which may aid in our mutual objective. "With khule.st personal regard, I am, .Sincerely yours, W^ii.L H. Hayes.
