...And You Shall Teach Your Children
Passover, the spring festival
which begins on the evening
of the 14th day of Nisan,
was divinely ordained as a
permanent reminder of God's
redemption of his people from
Egyptian bondage. The central
ceremony of the holiday is the Seder,
meaning "order," which is based on
the injunction to parents to teach
their children about the deliverance
from Egypt. The Mishnah gives a
formula for the four questions which
are asked by the child and to which
the father replies according to his
son's intelligence.
