HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Jemima A. Gorrell, born February 17, 1863, was the mother of Claude Earle (born about 1882),
Mary (born about 1884), Nola Inez, Greek E. (born about 1894), and Joseph W. (born about
1897). The family was originally from Ravenswood, West Virginia. By 1910 the U.S. Census
documents the family living in East Cleveland, Ohio. Jemima A. Gorrell was married to William
L. Gorrell. Business receipts found in the collection indicate that he was a dealer of poultry and
eggs. Telegrams found in the collection indicate that he died from a dose laudunum in 1900.
Jemima passed away October 5, 1924. Joseph, called Joe, and Claude Gorrell both served
with the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War I. Claude served in the
302nd Mechanic Rep Sh Quartermaster Corps and the 328th Motor Transport Corps. Joseph
was in the 303rd Motor Transport Corps. Greek Gorrell married David Wesley Heidy and they
had a daughter, Mary Rae, who was born around 1923. The 1930 U.S. Census records Greek
and David living in Cleveland Heights, Ohio with their daughter and also Greek’s siblings, Mary
and Joe. Mary Gorrell married J.L. Gladwell.
