Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Pioneer and
Historical Society of Muskingum County Records as a g i f t of the
society through the auspices of the curator, Kenneth Gale, in
November 1976. David Gray prepared the preliminary inventory in
January 1981.

Copyrights : The Pioneer and H i s t o r i c a l Society of Muskingum County
has dedicated such copyrights as it possesses in t h i s collection t o
the public. Consideration of a l l other copyrights is the
responsibility of the author and publisher.

3oxes 1- 7, 9- 13, and oversize volumes 1- 3 are open under the rules
and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society.

Transfer: Various broadsides, photographs, maps, c e r t i f i c a t e s ,
ribbons, e t c . , were transferred t o the Audio- visual Department i n
January 1981. Materials transferred t o the Public Records Department
include a muster book of the Ohio M i l i t i a , 1821- 1842; Justice of the
Peace Docket, Blue Rock Township, Muskingum County, 1815- 1819; and
a Straybook, Zanesville Township, Muskingum County, 1811- 1816. A
" condom" , ca. 1860, was transferred to the Education Department i n
February 1981.

Organizational sketch: The Pioneer and Historical Society of
Muskingum County was incorporated in March 1890 in Zanesville, Ohio.
As indicated by the preamble t o t h e i r c o n s t i t u t i o n , t h e Pioneer and
Historical Society was organized " for the purpose of perpetuating
the History of Muskingum County, Ohio and the Memory of the Pioneers
who s e t t l e d t h i s section of the Country: in order t o Collect a
Museum of Articles of Historic I n t e r e s t , and t o preserve these i n t a c t
for future generations: and f o r the Gathering together of a l l Rare
and Historical Works, Manuscripts and Papers published in t h i s
country: and for the Forming and Founding a Library of Science and
Xeference . . ." The Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum
County is a non- profit organization governed by six executive
o f f i c e r s and a board of t r u s t e e s .
