H i s t o r i c a l sketches: Albert Gallatin was born in Geneva i n 1761
andimigrated to the United States in 1780. He became prominent
as an expert a t public finance and was appointed secretary of the
treasury in 1801. He served i n t h i s capacity u n t i l 1814, a f t e r -
ward holding various public and p r i v a t e o f f i c e s of d i s t i n c t i o n .
Gallatin died in New York in 1849. Jared Mansfield was born i n
Connecticut in 1759 and rose t o prominence as a mathematician and
teacher. He interrupted his career from 1803 t o 1812 when Presi-dent
Jefferson appointed him surveyor general. During t h i s period
be lived in Marietta from 1803 to 1805, then moved the surveyor's
o f f i c e to Cincinnati. Mansfield r e t i r e d from teaching a t West
Point. and returned to Cincinnati in 1828. He died in 1830.

Scope and content: The Albert Gallatin papers consist of sixty-three
l e t t e r s dated 1800 t o 1811, which highlight business between
the surveyor general's office and i t s parent agency, the treasury
department. Included are eight l e t t e r s between Rufus Putnam, the
f i r s t surveyor general ( 1796- 1803), and Joseph Nourse, r e g i s t e r of
the treasury; f o r t y - s i x l e t t e r s between Jared Mansfield, second
surveyor- general ( 1803- 1812), and Albert G a l l a t i n , secretary of the
t r e a s u r y ; and nine l e t t e r s of Mansfield and Gallatin with other
o f f i c i a l s . The l e t t e r s are arranged in chronological order and
b r i e f l y described in the following calendar. Nany of the surveyor
g e n e r a l ' s l e t t e r s are in d r a f t form and contain extensive e d i t i n g .
Unless otherwise noted, a l l l e t t e r s of the treasury department are
from Washington, D. C. ; l e t t e r s of the surveyor general are from
blarietta through April 1805, and from Cincinnati t h e r e a f t e r .
