Rhodes
(1909-2001)
served
four
terms
as
governor
of
Ohio
, from
1963
to
1971
and
again
from
1975
to
1983
.
While
in
office
,
Rhodes
worked
to
erase
the
state
deficit
. In
1963
,
however
, he
proposed
the
largest
budget
in
Ohio
history
to
cover
educational
and
capital
improvements
. In
addition
, he
addressed
issues
such
as
law
enforcement
,
pollution
,
employment
, and
juvenile
delinquency
.
One
of his
most
significant
actions
as
governor
was the
decision
to
send
the
National
Guard
to
Kent
State
University
in
May
1970
in
response
to
protests
and
demonstrations
.
