Description	This six page booklet contains the text of Governor Andrew L. Harrisâ€™ annual message to the General Assembly on Jan. 4, 1909. Harris (1835-1915), Ohioâ€™s 44th governor, was a Republican politician and â€œfarmer statesmanâ€ who also served as a Civil War general, a lawyer, and a state senator. Harris took over as governor upon the death of John Pattison. He supported temperance efforts as well as conservation measures. Harrisâ€™ administration supported other progressive legislation, such as that which prohibited corporate political donations and regulated food and drugs. The General Assembly was not scheduled to meet in 1909 due to a new constitutional amendment regarding election years, but Harris called the assembly to meet in extraordinary session to discuss routine measures including senatorial election and appropriations.
